Kuenhof

Bressanone, Valle Isarco • Italy

Located in the northeastern Italian region of Valle Isarco, or Eisacktal, within Alto Adige/Sudtirol, the Kuenhof winery comprises six hectares between 1,800 and 2,300 feet above sea level. Riesling and Sylvaner vines grow on steep, stony, terraced vineyards, which are hand harvested and organically farmed with biodynamic tendencies.

Named after a 12th-century farmhouse in the area formerly owned by the Bishops of Bressanone, Kuenhof was founded by the Pliger family, which has now owned the land for 200 years. Until 1989, they sold their grapes to a nearby abbey. Now under the helm of Peter and Brigitte Pliger, and their son Simon, wines are produced with hands-off methods, including native yeast fermentations and low sulfur. The wines are then aged in stainless steel and about 30% acacia-wood barrels and bottled under screwcap shortly before the following harvest.
