Le Pianelle

Bramaterra, Piedmont • Italy

Le Pianelle is a love letter to the Alto Piemonte. Estate owners Dieter Heuskel and Peter DiPoli have entrusted the winemaking to the outstanding young Cristiano Garella. Andrea Zanetta, one of the best viticulturalists of the region, is also involved in the project. The hills of Bramaterra were once home to profound Nebbiolo, but the last hundred years have seen many vineyards abandoned as the region fell out of popularity.

Dieter and Peter saw opportunity in resurrection and purchased their first plot in 2004. They continued by buying 50 more small parcels, and in 2007 they were able to replant the Nebbiolo that had once produced the prolific wines of Alto Piemonte. As is typical of the region, the winery also grows Croatina and Vespolina, used for blending with Nebbiolo.

We are consistently amazed by the Le Pianelle wines, and as Antonio Galloni says in a Vinous article from April 2020, “Readers who have not checked out Le Pianelle owe it to themselves to do so. These are some of the most compelling reds in all of Italy.”
