In 1998, the Rare Wine Company—in partnership with Barbeito’s Ricardo Freitas—set out to reacquaint the U.S. with its most historically significant wine: Madeira.
The lineup is six wines, each named after some of the country’s most important Madeira cities: Baltimore, Boston, Charleston, New Orleans, New York, and Savannah. Rare Wine Company also has a line devoted to some of Revolutionary America’s most important characters: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. The importance of these wines in reviving interest in the Madeira category cannot be overstated.
